History of Corrugated
Corrugated is known as a traditional trustworthy packaging material – its strengths and capabilities are known worldwide. It has been around for 100 years, and its tradition of constantly changing and improving, of being innovative, keeps it in such a positive light.
WHAT IS IT?
Corrugated boxes are used for packing, storing and transporting products to factories, warehouses, retail stores, offices and homes. Corrugated boxes are also known as old corrugated cardboard (OCC) if the boxes have been deposited into a recycling bin. Cardboard is the most widely recycled of all packaging materials. Corrugated boxes have a fluted, corrugated medium layer (rippled layer), sandwiched between layers of linerboard.
Type of Corrugated Fiber Boxes
Corrugated Fiber Box has two main component:
- The linerboard, which is generally a flat foundation or facing that adheres to the medium.
- The medium, which is the wavy, fluted paper in between the linerboards, providing protective cushioning and depth.
There are 4 types of corrugated fiberboard. Each adds another layer of linerboard and medium, increasing strength in the fiberboard itself as well as providing increasing support and protection for the goods they carry. Each type is well suited for packaging a variety of products.
Single Face
A single medium is glued to one flat sheet of linerboard. You may have seen this type of corrugated used to protect breakable products within boxes or packaging.
Single Wall
The medium is between two sheets of linerboard. This type of corrugated cardboard is also known as Double Face. All of the walled corrugated products are suitable for boxes and packaging as the smooth exterior surfaces ensure that they are easily stacked for efficient storage and shipping. These surfaces are also suitable for printing brand identifiers such as logos and other information.
Double Wall
In this type of cardboard, there are three sheets of linerboard with two mediums in between. Double wall corrugated cardboard has all of the benefits of single wall with added strength which is beneficial for heavier items and for larger stacks in warehouses and shipping containers.
Triple Wall
For maximum strength and protection, four sheets of linerboard with three mediums in between. Triple wall cardboard is commonly used as a more lightweight substitute for wooden shipping crates for larger or heavier shipments.
